In an active world people often make the mistake of forgetting to take proper care of their feet. It does not take long, however, to see how damaging this can be if you are in a position to have to stand or walk for hours on end in your job. Even the surfaces you stand on can cause serious foot pain and long periods walking on concrete flooring can even damage the bones in your feet and ankles.

Fortunately modern medical science has developed a number of ways to aid this problem. Orthopedic shoes have become an essential part of the equipment we use for both work and play. With the long hours many workers must spend on their feet to perform the job, many workplaces require some form of orthopedic shoes as part of the uniform.

Orthopedic shoes tend to focus their special features on standard trouble areas of the foot. Fallen arches are a common source of pain as the weight of the day bears down on the middle of the foot. Short of surgery, an orthopedic shoe with a built up inner arch can give needed support and alleviate much of the pain associated with this often-hereditary condition. Heel supports are often built into orthopedic shoes as a means of softening the blow that runs up the lower leg bones with each step. These supports are often made of foam or gel and can add a degree of rigidity to the ankle area that will help prevent twists.

Some orthopedic shoes are designed to hold pads in place against such troublesome spots as corns, bunions, calluses and abrasions. The innersole of an orthopedic shoe is generally a separate feature which has many customizable forms to more accurately treat what ails your foot. Some are foam or gel so that a softer actual surface can come in contact with the foot. Others, especially for those with diabetes or long term standing still jobs, have a textured surface of small raised nubs to stimulate blood flow through the foot.

Orthopedic shoes will often have extra braces or sleeves built-in or easily attached to the shoe. These range from small clips that separate in-drawn toes to full lower leg braces that will provide support for the entire leg structure. The structure of some orthopedic shoes is built to support and cushion the foot from damage. Walking and hiking shoes especially are designed to hold the foot comfortably and safely through the rigors of extended periods of activity.

While there are a great many orthopedic shoes made to specific standards, there is also a large demand for custom-made orthopedic shoes. It is a fact that you can be written a doctor’s prescription for a specially designed orthopedic shoe to aid in the treatment of specific problems of the foot and ankle. Some of the most common foot problems that can be treated with specially made shoes are arch pains and bunions. Corns and calluses can be contained within specially carved and padded areas within the inner wall of a shoe so as to relieve the pressure of contact on the afflicted part.

Drop foot and hammertoes are conditions created by poorly constructed footwear that has deformed the growing tissue in a young person’s foot. Specially designed orthopedic shoes can to a degree counterbalance these problems to give the sufferer a more natural step action. Diabetics tend to have problems with blood circulation in their feet so orthopedic shoes are designed that can stimulate the nerves of the foot to provide a better flow through the limb, thus decreasing the chance of swelling or hemorrhaging.

Onychocryptosis, commonly known as ingrown nails (unguis incarnatus) or ingrowing nails, is a common form of nail disease. It is a painful condition in which the nail grows or cuts into one or both sides of the nail bed. While ingrown nails can occur in both the nails of the hand and feet, they occur most commonly with toenails. An ingrown toenail is a painful condition of the toe. The area is usually red and may be warm; if not treated, it is prone to infection. With bacterial invasion, the nail margin becomes red and swollen often demonstrating drainage or pus. Often, you can take care of ingrown toenails on your own. If the pain is severe or spreading, however, your doctor can take steps to relieve your discomfort and help you avoid complications of an ingrown toenail.

If you have diabetes or another condition that causes poor circulation to your feet, you’re at greater risk of complications from an ingrown toenail. The toenail (and any other nail) is produced by the nail’s germinal matrix (special nail-generating tissue) and grows forward to the end of the toe. Most of us have lost either a fingernail or toenail and watched as the nail regrew slowly over several months. The area under the nail that attaches the nail to the toe is called the sterile matrix. The sterile matrix doesn’t produce the nail. The sterile matrix just attaches the nail to the toe.

What causes an ingrown toenail?

While many things can cause ingrown toenails, the major causes are shoes that don’t fit well and improperly trimmed nails. Shoes that are too tight press the sides of the nail and make it curl into the skin. Nails that are peeled off at the edge or trimmed down at the corners are also more likely to become ingrown.

Symptoms

Symptoms of an ingrown nail include pain along the margins of the nail (caused by hypergranulation that occurs around the aforementioned region), worsening of pain when wearing shoes or other tight articles, and sensitivity to pressure of any kind, even that of light bedding. Irritation, redness, an uncomfortable sensation of warmth, as well as swelling can result from an ingrown toenail. When the toenail grows into the surrounding tissue, a painful toe is the result. Ingrown nails may produce no symptoms at first but eventually may become painful, especially when pressure is applied to the ingrown area. The great toe is usually affected, but any toenail can become ingrown. In people who have diabetes or poor circulation this relatively minor problem can be become quite severe.

Treatment of Ingrown toenails

Here is list of the methods for treating Ingrown toenails:

Apply a mild antiseptic solution to the area.

Soak the foot in warm water 4 times a day. You do not need to add soap or antibacterial agents to the water.

Partial nail removal with cauterization of the nail matrix is curative in 70-90% of cases.

If excessive inflammation, swelling, pain, and discharge develops, the toenail probably is infected and should be treated by a physician. A podiatrist can trim or remove the infected nail with a minor in-office surgical procedure. A portion of the nail or overgrown skin is removed with a scalpel and the infection is treated.

Prevention

The most common place for ingrown nails is in the big toe, but ingrowth can occur on any nail. Ingrown nails can be avoided by cutting nails straight across; nails should not be cut along a curve, nor should they be cut too short. Footwear which is too small, either in size or width, or those with too shallow a ‘toe box’ will exacerbate any underlying problem with a toenail.

Foot care should be an essential part of a daily health care regimen. Feet work hard during every day while supporting the body during standing, walking or running. Being confined in shoes and socks that retain moisture, or in sandals-type shoes which roughen skin, feet are prone to problems such as bunions, a painful enlargement at the joint of the big toe; corns or calluses caused by pressure on the skin of your foot resulting in hard, sometimes painful, patches of skin; plantar warts, which result from an infection by a virus; and fungal or bacterial infections such as athlete’s foot that occur from an excess of moisture common in the foot area which allows the fungus to grow.

There are many different ways to keep your feet healthy and prevent any problems with your feet. Out of all the methods ranging from buying over the counter products to visiting the doctor, the best way to treat your feet is the natural way. Using various easy home remedies you can cure your feet from many common types of conditions. And by using home made preventive remedies you can ensure that you never get these types of conditions again. However in extreme cases such as athlete’s foot it would be a good idea to consult a doctor, as you might need to take oral medication along with application medicines.

There are many over- the- counter products available to treat the common ailments of the foot. Lotions are used to treat dry and cracked skin, and often contain oils such as peppermint, to cool and soothe the feet and condition skin. Calluses can be treated using a pumice stone or similar device, which when rubbed gently on the affected area, removes the dry, dead skin so the fresh skin underneath is exposed. The alternatives to the pumice stone are foot files and loofah products that work much like the stone in removing old skin. There is a wide array of lotion and oil products available to use in combination with the files, stones, and loofah, making the sloughing off of dead skin more beneficial and easier to do. Liquid soaps and lotions also may contain pumice-like materials which exfoliate the feet. Prior to using these techniques, it is good idea to soak feet first in a bucket of water or utilize a store-bought foot bath to make the skin softer and removing hard skin easier. Foot baths are often electric and generate heated water and relaxing bubbles that bring relief to tired feet and legs and helps with the circulation of blood. Products such as foot powders and sprays aid in the reduction of moisture and help keep feet dry and odor-free while wearing shoes and socks.

Proper toe nail care is also an important part of maintaining foot health. Regularly trimming nails prevents painful ingrown nails which may lead to infections. Professional pedicures performed in beauty salons are often added to weekly or monthly foot care regimens. Pedicures typically incorporate massage, nail care, and skin care at relatively inexpensive prices. For treatments at home, salon style tools and products can be purchased and used for regular foot care maintenance.

Remember the most fundamental remedy is to keep your feet clean and to wear the proper foot wear. No matter how fashionable your sandals may be, if they are causing a problem throw them out. This is the best preventive measure you can take on behalf of your feet.

You may never have even heard of a podiatrist until today, when suddenly your primary care physician referred you to one, or you found yourself looking online for a foot doctor and learned that they are called podiatrists.

There are a lot of reasons that one might find themselves needing a Chicago podiatry appointment. From the mundane to the extreme, the chronic to the urgent, so many hazards can befall the foot. Here are just a few of the things podiatrists can help patients with:

Injuries and trauma. The lower extremities can become injured in many different ways. There can be a sports injury that results in a twisted ankle. Someone can step on a nail and find themselves far more attached to the deck than they thought they were. A walk across a bed of coals can go in a very unfortunate direction. You can be doing a fierce pogo in a dance club mosh pit and land wrong. All of these severe one time incidents can be treated in a Chicago podiatry office.

Diabetic care. The feet of a diabetic individual have special problems that are not present in the average healthy patient. These can include circulation issues, sores, and calluses. Your podiatrist can give you advice for how to treat your feet differently if you have diabetes.

Worker compensation issues. Your feet are there with you when you are at work as well as at home, and sometimes an injury can befall them while you are on the job. Podiatrists can take care of this sort of injury in their office. You do not necessarily need to visit an emergency room, although if the limb is in any way threatened you certainly should. However, for a routine treatment, you can submit worker compensation paperwork through the podiatrist.

Foreign bodies. The splinter you were so sure you would not get if you took your shoes off for that walk down the wood stairs to the beach. That glass that slipped out of your hand and hit the kitchen floor right next to your toe. The above mentioned deck nail. There are lots of types of foreign bodies that you can find have imbedded themselves in your foot, and a podiatrist can help you take care of them.

Whatever needs your feet may have, if you are in the Chicago area, a podiatry office is near you and standing by to keep you dancing in the streets.

When it comes to proper Chicago diabetic foot care, being informed is essential. Individuals with Diabetes often suffer from poor foot blood circulation, and this can lead to atherosclerosis if left untreated. Trauma to the foot and infections can also cause serious complications of common foot conditions such as athletes foot and ingrown toenails.

Smoking any form of tobacco can also disrupt the already slow healing process in the bodies of diabetic patients, and as such is a major risk factor for both infections and amputations.

Symptoms of a potential foot problem may vary, and can include persistent pan, redness, swelling, pain in legs or buttocks that increases with walking, localized warmth, drainage of pus, limping or difficulty walking, fever or chills in association with a wound, red streaking away from the infection site, new or lasting numbness in the feel or legs, and other related symptoms and conditions.

Another important component of proper Chicago diabetic foot care is knowing when to make an appointment with your doctor, if you already have a diabetic foot or leg problem.

You should make an appointment with your doctor when you experience any significant trauma to your feet or legs, when you experience any persistent mild to moderate pain in your feet or legs, develop any new blister, wound, or ulcer less than 1 inch across, discover any new areas or warmth redness or swelling, pain redness or swelling around a toenail, and any new or constant numbness to your feet or legs.

If you experience difficulty when walking, you should be evaluated for symptoms of diabetic arthritis, since early intervention is key to preventing serious complications. When you visit your doctor, he or she will ask you questions about your symptoms, and perform an examination that will include your vital signs, i.e. pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate, an examination to determine the degree of circulation and sensation in your feet and legs, an examination of the problem area, and certain laboratory tests.

You may be asked to undergo a complete blood cell count, or CBC, to determine the presence and severity of infection, and may have your blood sugars, kidney functions, and electrolytes tested as well. Your doctor may also order X rays of your feet in order to pinpoint bone damage, foreign bodies or gas n the soft tissues, which is an indication of gangrene. Other tests may also be ordered as needed.

If you experience foot pain caused by plantar fasciitis, you are most likely in search of successful plantar fasciitis pain therapy. You are not alone. Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of foot pain. This condition is due to an inflammation of the band of tissues (plantar fascia) connecting your heel to your toes. Many people say that the pain feels like a stabbing or burning sensation that starts at the heel and tends to spread forward into the toes. This is why many folks are so desperate to find plantar fasciitis pain therapy. It can be agonizingly painful and will get worse without therapy.

The Causes

The first step in order to receive the correct form of plantar fasciitis pain therapy is to figure out the cause of the condition. There are many different factors that can cause plantar fasciitis, such as:

· Tight calf muscles

· Injury from running, jumping, etc.

· On-set Arthritis

· Poor-fitting shoes

Plantar Fasciitis Pain Therapy

You doctor or podiatrist can help you discover the cause of your condition. After the cause has been determined, your doctor will advise you on the best plantar fasciitis pain therapy. Most of the time, plantar fasciitis pain therapy is easily conducted at home with exercise, rest and relaxation. Sometimes staying off your feet for a given amount of time is the best form of plantar fasciitis pain therapy. Other times, a doctor may tell you to apply tape across the plantar fascia located just in front of the heel where the arch begins to allow the inflammation to subside and the foot to heal correctly.

Another method of plantar fasciitis pain therapy is a series of exercises to strengthen the foot, stretching exercises and the application ice to the area of inflammation for 10 – 15 minutes, 3X a day to reduce pain and swelling.

Also, taking over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen (DO NOT take Aspirin) will help alleviate the pain. Finally, many doctors will suggest select stretching exercises as plantar fasciitis pain therapy for prevention and treatment.

Having plantar fascia is no fun. It can get in the way of your daily activities by limiting your mobility due to the pain. This is why plantar fasciitis pain therapy is necessary to eliminate the discomfort of this irritating condition.

For more information about plantar fascia pain therapy, visit The Plantar Fasciitis Organization’s website. This comprehensive website provides more detailed information about the causes of plantar fasciitis and which plantar fasciitis pain therapy may work best or you.
